Arthur Gossard received his bachelor' s degree in physics summa cum laude in 1956 from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in physics from University of California, Berkeley (1960).

He was Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff of AT&T Bell Laboratories between 1960 to 1987 and has been Professor of Materials and Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Santa Barbara since 1987.
